Etymology of Goodwill
Goodwill is a word made up of two parts: "good" and "will".
"Good" means good, and "will" means desire or opinion about someone.
Here, we are taking it in the terms of opinion. Is your opinion of someone good, or is someone's opinion of you good?
So, this is a kind of goodwill.
Example to understand meaning of Goodwill
Let's say there is a student named Devanshi. Devanshi is a very good girl in school. How did she become a good girl? She has the qualities of a good child.
Traits of a Good Student
- Good children do their homework regularly at school.
- They do not eat tiffin in the class. Naughty students do not eat tiffin in the tiffin interval and finish it in the morning first period while quietly sitting at the back.
- Good students behave well with their fellow students. The opposite type of students trouble their classmates. The teacher will be teaching in the class and such mischievous students will keep disturbing the students sitting next to him.
- Good students help their fellow students in their studies.
- Good students share their cold water bottle with their teacher in hot summers. The teacher is also very happy with the child who gives water to the teacher from his water bottle in the summers. We have all seen this in our school life.

- Good students take part in extracurricular activities like debate, singing, dancing, sports.
- Representing the school, bringing laurels to the school's name at the district level, state level also have a good impression on the teacher.
- There are many other reasons why teachers have a good impression about few students.

We know that if we do all these things, we will have a good impression in front of the teachers.
What is Self Generated Goodwill
Devanshi did all this, so naturally all the teachers have a good opinion of Devanshi, she is a good student. So, we say that the teachers have goodwill for Devanshi. There is goodwill in the minds of teachers and principal for Devanshi.
Here Devanshi did not buy or sell anything. She just behaved well, was disciplined, and so the teachers had goodwill for her. She worked hard and created her own goodwill. This goodwill is self-generated. So what will we call this goodwill?
We will call it self-generated goodwill.
